"IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT IN THE EARLIEST YEARS OF MUSIC EDUCATION THAT TEACHING IS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, AS THESE INFORMATIVE YEARS MOULD THE MUSICAL FUTURE OF THE CHILD"

~ YVONNE FRYE ~

According to the principles of the above quote, Colourstrings is a fully integrated approach to music education for young children. It is a holistic, child-centred music education programme which was developed by Hungarian-born violinist and pedagogue Dr Géza Szilvay, and it is based on the Kodály principles. It places children on a musical path from imagination and singing right through to musical literacy, and then seamlessly transitioning into instrumental training.

From birth to when children are able to read, Colourstrings focuses on growing the musician within the child by instilling a sense of pulse, rhythm, pitch, musical awareness and musical appreciation; this is done through imagination and age-appropriate activities and repertoires. Children explore music through their natural instrument – their voice. From birth to 3 years old, music education takes place at a subconscious level. Thereafter, children start to learn rhythm and pitch at a half-conscious level until, by 5 or 6 years old, they are ready to read, dictate, sing and notate music with understanding, rather than just by rote learning. At this point children are ready to embark on instrumental training, as the foundation of musicianship has grown within them first.

Colourstrings is an internationally-acclaimed music education approach which has proven results all over the world and, more importantly, it is not a franchise, but rather is run by qualified Colourstrings teachers. To become a qualified Colourstrings teacher takes at least a year of training and research.
